I think Tate's has a wide selection of ice cream to chose from and the establishment is neat and clean. The ice cream flavors we chose were very good. My complaints are mostly with the way the establishment is run. We entered the store as a birthday party was beginning. With the party going on, there is no place for a patron to sit and staff noticed this and did not offer a solution. Furthermore, my young children were mistaken as birthday party members and given a craft project to work on, only to have it rudely taken away with the comment "oh you're not part of the party." Honestly, I would have bought the craft rather than hurt a small child's feelings. Meanwhile, owner is paranoid about children looking at the small toys for sale in the store. Why bother to sell them then? Finally, there are signs all over the store discouraging you from paying with a credit or debit card due to the owner's fees and another warning you can't use the bathroom! Really? I won't be back.

Nestled comfortably within the beautiful streets that are downtown La Grange, lies this old-fashioned, one-of-a-kind ice cream shop. It's something that you can't find just anywhere. I moved into La Grange two weeks ago and visited Tates for the first time yesterday. Unfortunately for my figure, I believe I will be making weekly trips to this joint. Let's start with the ice cream. What's that? You make every last flavor right in that tiny shop?! I tried the pistachio almond and an Irish Mocha something that had a rich chocolatey, coffee taste. I wish that generous double scoop could have lasted forever. I wasn't terribly daring in my flavor choice, however, there are plenty of flavors to choose from. Some of the flavors are suggestions by customers brought to life! All fresh and homemade by the incredible, Maria. The new owner, Maria, is quite possibly sweeter than the confections she spends hours concocting in her store. The minute I entered Tates, I was greeted by Maria and even got a few moments to chat. It's apparent that she absolutely loves what she does and is dedicated to pleasing her guests. She has trained the rest of her staff very well. They all smile and seem to enjoy their job...well, who wouldn't? It's ice cream! Spending time in Tates is an incredibly relaxing experience. From the minute I walked in, I was taken away from the hustle and bustle of life outside those walls. The old-fashioned school desks, combined with the shelves of old-fashioned candy and sweets took me away. The decor is spot on and I couldn't help but smile the entire time I was there.

I had the Bordeaux Swirl

Ice cream is really good here, snow cones are more icy than I'd like, but they have some cool candy on the wall for purchase that I can't find other places which is a plus. There isn't much seating, but on a nice day you can sit outside by the curb or take your ice cream for a walk around downtown LaGrange.

Family run, super-friendly and terrific ice cream. Games to play on the tables and player of the game tokens make it a fave for the kids. Loving having an establishment like this in my town.

After reading all these reviews I figured Tates ice cream and cookies would be the perfect way to celebrate our 1 week wedding anniversary. I called and spoke to the owner (Maria) and asked her if to please set aside some cookies for me and she told me that she had stopped baking cookies because of all the bakeries that had recently opened in La Grange. I let her know that I had been to the 3 other bakeries within a block of her and that none of them were very good, one of the newest ones had messed up my wedding cake just the week before. She felt so bad she said she would bake cookies for me and would have them ready by the time I got off work. She really is the sweetest person in the world. One of the previous reviewers said it best when they described her as being like a Kindergarten teacher. When I went to pick up my order she greated me with a hug and congratulated me on our nuptuals and then started feeding me samples of all her amazing icecream to help me decide what icecream to bring home. I am so appreciative of the fact that she baked those cookies for us and even called her the next day to tell her. They were the BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES I HAVE EVER HAD. My husband loved the oreo ice cream & mint ice cream I had picked out for him. The bordeaux and the praline were right up my alley. Just fabulous, you could taste the freshness and the quality of her ingredients. Thank you Maria for making our 1 week anniversary so wonderful. I wish you could have made our wedding cake for us.

Skip Cold Stone!!! Go to Tate's around the block. It's It's worth seeking out. Let me tell you why Cold Stone really gets me P.O.ed . The workers behind the counter are standing there folding over your ice cream with a metal spatula thing as if they're actually "making" ice cream. Really?! Quit plating with my food and give it to me. It doesn't give you the right to charge such high prices for ice cream. Plus when people tip them for this fake labor they're supposed to sing. I'll tip you to NOT SING. Whoa! My pathological hatred for franchises if getting the better of me....... So uh yeah go to Tate's. The have an excellent old fashion ice cream parlor atmosphere and the lady who runs it is really nice and more importantly the ice cream is SO GOOOOD. These are the unique places that need to be nurtured, enjoyed, and supported. Choose Tate's.

Oh how I love Tate's. When my husband and I moved to the area, it was in the spring just before they opened for the season officially. I was driving by there all the time waiting for them to open, that's how good they are. Now that they're staying open year round, I am going to have to maximize my gym membership to offset how often I am going to stop in during the winter. My usual is mint chocolate chip and chocolate sundae. I love their whipped cream and fudge topping. I've also had the triple chocolate, chocolate chip, and some sort of chocolate/mocha flavor. So good. They're all so good. When I got my wisdom teeth out I subsisted on this and Plush Horse ice cream. Much better than Coldstone. It's a little tucked away but so worth it.

This place is the best ice cream!!! Wow, my all time favorite ice cream ever (and boy have I had a lot!) is Tate's Triple Chocolate. If you are a true chocolate ice cream fan, you MUST try this. It is so worth every calorie I am sure that the whole cream treat delivers!!! Yummy. I love the fact that it is a small and unique family business, not a chain. Students usually work here and the shop has a sort of funkiness to it, with cute iron ice cream shop tables and chairs. If I could only have one dessert for the rest of my life, I would pick Tate's Triple Chocolate. Yes, I am that big of a fan!!!!

Just had HANDS DOWN the best ice cream flavor of the summer at this shop: Bordeaux Swirl

I was worried with new management that Tate's would lose some of what made it special.... and I'm happy to say that it hasn't. Same great ice cream, fair prices, great service.

This is a great little neighborhood ice cream shop. Nothing fancy, just good, cheap ice cream. My wife, daughter and I each got a child's size scoop in a cup, and it was plenty for us all. I actually ended up eating the rest of my 3 year old daugher's ice cream as she couldn't finish the child's size. They actually have a pretty decent variety of flavors. My daugher got somehting blue - maybe blueberry? - and my wife got chocolate and cherry, which was really good. They have a few tables inside, including some extra small tables for toddlers which is a nice touch for the little ones. I'll be back for sure; I'd much rather spend money here than at a chain like Cold Stone.

Curled up with a cup of Tate's Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream. Oh yum! Very tasty, not overly peanut buttery or too sweet, just right. Other visitors were trying the clever new flavors she's created. So many to choose from. Love this downtown La Grange family-owned ice cream shop. The new owner, Maria, really makes you feel welcome and makes your visit a pure delight. I've declared myself a regular!

We went to Tate's for the first time after having moved to the area a couple of years ago. Not only did we enjoy excellent ice cream, it was an all around wonderful experience. There are games on the tables and the owner came around with crayons and a picture for my granddaughter to color. She was very friendly and helpful. She offered to keep a pint we got to-go in the freezer as she knew were were staying for awhile. We were warmly welcomed and felt comfortable lingering. She engaged in a nice conversation with our granddaughter even though I know she was busy trying to clean up and prepare for closing. As for the ice cream, I don't know what to say that has not already been said, but I agree it is some of the best around and they sell other treats as well such as old fashioned candies and moon pies. The decor is charming with a display of vintage ice cream cartons, etc. We will be back!!

I have been going here for years. Great place, great service, and a really quaint atmosphere. La Grange would be a different town without it.

Tates ice cream is seriously the BEST homemade ice cream in the western suburbs. Tates offers an array of delicious flavors (from the traditional chocolate to the not so traditional "blue moon"). Their portions are generous and the prices are friendly. The atmosphere is typical of an old fashioned ice cream shop: friendly and welcoming!

Inside felt like the place had been there for quite sometime, which gave it that nostalgic feel to it, especially with the 50's music playing. Got 2 quarts ($9.49 each) of triple chocolate and cookie dough and a pint ($5.49 each) of pumpkin. You can't feel but feel somewhat humble (that the right word?) around the owner. She's someone who seemed authentically nice, had a kindergarten teacher vibe. The place is tailor-made for kids with the crayons and coloring books everywhere. Even I felt like a little kid talking to her while waiting for my ice cream. Anyway, the ice cream was above average and you could tell that it was house made. Particularity, the triple chocolate, which she recommend, and cookie dough were the standouts.

Gosh what a fun little place. The icecream shop has a vintage look you feel like you are in the middle of no where. There are soooo many options!! They also have sorbet. I have had their icecream and a sundae. Prices seem high but then I think about it and it is the same as cold stone but this is homemade (and small business)....and less sugary tasting.

This reminds me so of the ice cream shop of my childhood. Wait. Shoppe. That's how you make it vintage-y, right? I used to live down the street from an ice cream shop when I was very young. I would walk there with my mom or my dad and only eat bubble gum or blue moon ice cream. Those were my only two options. Seriously, how can you top ice cream that leaves you with wad of gum long after the ice cream is gone or ice cream that turns your mouth an eerie shade of blue? The answer, obviously, is you can't! While I was thrilled to see my formerly coveted bubble gum ice cream, I've graduated to the more respectable chocolate almond, which Tate's absolutely killed. A single scoop in a cake cone ::swoon:: was enough to make me stop and enjoy the moment. My supermom companion and Lil B shared the Rocky Road with two sticky thumbs up. Bonus points for the old school little tables and the mini table and chairs that is perfectly child-size. Very friendly employees will make sure you get your money's worth on your scoops. Make sure you stop at the ATM, much like the old times, this place is CASH ONLY. A very close jaunt from the LaGrange train station, Tate's will leave you wanting more. You know, "I scream, you scream...." Totally applies here.

Family and local favorite. The ice cream is terrific with plenty of yummy flavors to choose from. They also offer a wide variety of old school candy. Indoor and our door seating and kid friendly environment.
